Navigating the FinTech Frontier: An Interview with PayMongo’s President Miel Pahati

In an exclusive interview with Miel Pahati, President of PayMongo Payments Inc, we explored his diverse career journey, the unique positioning of PayMongo in the competitive FinTech industry, and the company's future plans. Miel's career path is a testament to the dynamic nature of professional growth and the evolving landscape of financial technology.

From Climbing Athlete to FinTech Leader

Miel’s career trajectory is anything but conventional. After graduating from the University of Asia and the Pacific with a focus on business management, he initially pursued a career as a professional athlete and coach. His passion for sports and competition led him to international events such as the X Games and world championships. However, his financial aspirations eventually guided him towards the banking sector.

Starting as a credit analyst at HSBC, Miel gained invaluable insights into operations, risk management, and retail consumer banking. His subsequent roles in business development and sales deepened his understanding of the financial services industry. By 2017, recognizing the transformative potential of technology in finance, Miel transitioned into the FinTech sector, joining one of the largest e-wallet providers in the Philippines.

PayMongo's Distinct Edge in a Competitive Market

PayMongo, founded by a team of Filipino entrepreneurs, has positioned itself uniquely in the FinTech space by focusing on the needs of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). According to Miel, the company's initial success stemmed from addressing key pain points in the market, such as cumbersome onboarding processes, high setup costs, and fragmented payment methods.

"The pandemic accelerated the adoption of digital payments, and PayMongo was poised to meet the surge in demand," Miel explained.

The company's strategy of integrating multiple payment methods into a seamless platform has been a major factor in its competitive edge. Beyond payments, PayMongo has expanded its offerings to include digital wallets, lending products, and financial analytics, all aimed at empowering SMEs to thrive in the digital economy.

Key to Success: Empowering Entrepreneurs

One of PayMongo's core philosophies is to support entrepreneurs throughout their growth journey. SMEs require solutions that meet them where they are at every stage of their development. By providing a comprehensive suite of financial services—from payment processing to lending and financial management—PayMongo enables SMEs to not only play competitively, but also thrive meaningfully in the digital economy. Miel highlighted the inspiring story of Bebang’s Halo Halo, a small online seller that leveraged PayMongo's solutions to expand from a Facebook-based business to a thriving offline retail operation, thanks to PayMongo’s solutions.

Miel emphasized that the company’s success is rooted in its ability to address evolving market needs with innovative solutions. "Our objective is to unlock the potential of businesses in the digital realm and provide them with the tools they need to succeed," he said.

Navigating Regulatory Challenges

Operating in the FinTech space involves navigating a complex regulatory landscape. Miel detailed how PayMongo maintains a close relationship with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and collaborates with various stakeholders, including commercial banks and e-wallet providers. A key element of this collaboration is a collective strategy to drive Open Finance in pursuit of real financial inclusion, aligning with the broader Digital Payments Transformation Roadmap.

This approach not only ensures regulatory compliance but also fosters innovation within the industry. "Co-evolution is key," Miel noted. "We work closely with regulators and industry partners to manage risks, enhance security, and streamline customer experiences."

Looking Ahead: The Future of PayMongo

As PayMongo looks to the future, Miel is excited about the company’s evolution into a comprehensive financial ecosystem. Beyond expanding its payment services, PayMongo is focused on enhancing its lending and issuing capabilities, and embracing new technological innovations driven by its EMI license.

Our mission is to make financial services more accessible and impactful for businesses of all sizes,” Miel concluded.“The next few years will be an exciting period as we expand our offerings and drive financial inclusion, creating a more inclusive and integrated financial landscape in the Philippines."

With passion for empowering Filipino businesses through digital payment solutions, Miel is leading with a clear mission in line with the vision defined by Jojo Malolos, CEO & President of PayMongo Group and Luis Sia, Co-founder & Chairman of the Board., a PayMongo continues to be a key player in the FinTech industry, driving financial inclusion and supporting the growth of businesses across the country. With the ever-changing landscape of digital payments, PayMongo is poised to remain a leader, helping to shape the future of payments in the Philippines.
