Eric Schulze MD, PhD

Margaux Zurbano

Lifetrack Medical Systems is a pioneer in healthcare technology, offering cutting-edge solutions for radiology and imaging. Their Hybrid cloud-based and/or Onsite platform, Lifetrack, streamlines workflows and enhances efficiency for healthcare providers across Southeast Asia. With a focus on innovation and affordability, Lifetrack empowers healthcare providers to deliver exceptional patient care while optimizing operations. Their commitment to quality and customer satisfaction has solidified their position as a trusted partner in the region. With that, why don't you join me in learning more about Lifetrack Medical Systems with its Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Eric Schulze.

Could you tell me more about yourself and how this led you to the career you have today?

I have a strong foundation in the biological sciences, having earned my BA from UC Berkeley and my MD/PhD from University of California at San Francisco. My PhD research focused on cell biology, and I completed my Radiology Residency at Harvard’s Massachusetts General Hospital.

I've built a successful career in radiology informatics and operations, with expertise in RIS/PACS integration and software development. I've even founded and sold a healthcare technology company, selling my last company to a NYSE publicly listed company in 2011). To add, I’m also an inventor with 12 US patents. Lifetrack Medical Systems is post Series A with Credit Suisse/UOB and Philips as Lead Investors.

My work at Lifetrack Medical Systems focuses on developing innovative radiology software solutions that improve diagnosis and training, particularly in regions with limited access to healthcare, such as, but not limited to, The Philippines, Nigeria, and India while improving workflow efficiency for more developed markets such as the US and Singapore.

What work do you do as the CEO of Lifetrack Medical Systems on a daily basis?

I think that the role responsibilities are very standard across industries. But I usually meet with different teams to assess ongoing projects and triage projects in the pipeline. These projects are separated across different teams. The IT department has their own, the marketing department has their own, and so on and so forth. I usually give my insights and suggestions on these different projects and how we can best execute them to ensure that the company mission and vision is carried out properly.

What is Lifetrack Medical Systems all about? What products and services do you offer?

Our main product is a software that radiologists use to read digital images. We have 11 United States patents and they’re all based on how to do software in a way that makes it easy to deploy, use, and become more efficient for radiologists. We want to help radiologists do their work faster and more efficiently.

We also do some United States teleradiology professional services work where we read cases ourselves, but we use our own software. This means that we do quality assurance on our own software by using it ourselves in production. Something unique that we do in this industry is that our software is also built to train radiologists because right now, there is a significant lack of radiologists across the world.

What do you think are the challenges of healthcare in the Philippines?

There are a lot actually. One of them would be training. Ironically, the Philippines has a lot of medical schools compared to other emerging markets. However, these schools are built to train nurses to work abroad and not locally. They are training a lot of nurses and doctors to work overseas. The second issue would be brain drain. Filipino medical professionals are trained here but often prefer to work abroad. In Lifetrack, we help  train these Filipino radiologists and raise their knowledge and skills up to US academic level standards. The third issue would be resource scarcity. There are just not enough doctors in the country to cover all of the hospitals. The fourth would be the lack of internet in rural areas (although with Starlink this issue has now been technically resolved. The last challenge would be budget or financial constraints in the government. There might not be enough money to buy hardware and software that are necessary to extend the reach of high quality medicine in the rural hospitals.

One of the things we have recently achieved is to get Government Hospital Contracts in The Philippines. We now have  500 bed Government academic teaching  hospitals using our software. We are also selling our software to government hospitals because we interface with the government systems. Now that there's Starlink, we are looking into getting into the (often more remote) district or rural hospitals.

Would you be able to share any success stories that Lifetrack Medical Systems  was able to play a part in?

One success story would be getting through the COVID-19 pandemic. I consider this a big success. Another one would be getting into or partnering with government hospitals. This happened during COVID and we were very fortunate to have gotten these partnerships. We continued building our software and adding new features and even getting more patents.

What’s the future like for Lifetrack Medical Systems?

One of the things we do well is assessing new technologies, identifying how these technologies should be used, and when these should be used.

Dr. Eric Schulze is the Chief Executive Officer of Lifetrack Medical Systems. He is responsible for overseeing development of projects and new healthcare solutions, market expansion, networking, and setting company goals and directions among many others. His presence is incredibly important in enabling Lifetrack to ensure that it is able to realize its mission and vision through daily operations and incredibly impactful projects. As seen in him, Dr. Eric Schulze wants to bridge the gap in healthcare disparities across the world.
